Internet Speed Test
Test your internet connection speed. Check download, upload speeds and latency.
๐ถ What Is an Internet Speed Test and How Does It Work?
An internet speed test is a diagnostic tool that measures the performance of your internet connection by testing three key metrics: download speed, upload speed, and latency (ping). These measurements help you understand whether your connection is performing as expected, troubleshoot issues, and determine if your internet plan meets your needs for activities like streaming, gaming, video conferencing, or working from home.
Our free Internet Speed Test provides instant, accurate measurements of your connection performance directly in your browser. Unlike some speed tests that require software downloads or account creation, this tool works immediately on any device with a web browser. The results help you understand not just how fast your connection is, but what activities it can reliably support.
๐ฌ How Speed Tests Measure Your Connection
Understanding the testing methodology helps you interpret results more accurately. Here's what happens during each phase of the test:
| Measurement | What's Tested | How It's Measured |
|---|---|---|
| Ping/Latency | Response time to a server | Small data packets are sent and the round-trip time is recorded in milliseconds |
| Download Speed | How fast you receive data | Multiple files are downloaded from servers; data received per second is calculated |
| Upload Speed | How fast you send data | Sample data is uploaded to servers; data sent per second is calculated |
๐ Understanding Mbps: Internet speeds are measured in Megabits per second (Mbps). One megabit equals 1,000,000 bits. To put this in perspective: downloading a 1GB file at 100 Mbps takes about 80 seconds, while at 25 Mbps it takes about 5 minutes. Note that Mbps (megabits) is different from MBps (megabytes) โ there are 8 bits in a byte, so 100 Mbps equals approximately 12.5 MBps in file transfer terms.
